Review: I wanted this to be better than it was. I love the Terry Pratchett Discworld novels and was really excited when my TiVo picked this up shortly before Christmas. Parts of it were great. The casting was superb for Death, Susan, Albert, Banjo, the wizards, and several others. The guy who played Teatime irritated the crap out of me, however. I just didn’t like his interpretation of the character at all. I also expected it to be funnier. Don’t get me wrong—it did have plenty of laughs. But not as many as the books do.

The special effects were inconsistent in their quality, but that is to be expected I suppose as made-for-television movies rarely have the budget that big screen movies do. In all, when they were good, they were pretty good, when they were mediocre, they were at least not distracting, but a few times when they were bad, I did have to laugh.

I liked it well enough to burn a copy to DVD from my TiVo, but I have to admit that I was a little disappointed. The excitement I felt when I saw it had recorded perhaps made my expectations too high.

I actually just got around to watching this. My dad had burned a copy for me when it came on back around Thanksgiving, but I hadn’t read that book yet, so I wanted to wait until I did. The special effects didn’t really bother me (but like you said, it’s a TV movie, so I did’t expect anything TOO fantastic). Teatime did get a little annoying at times … he wasn’t really what I had pictured, but then I could see what they were thinking. He was, at least, sufficiently creepy. It’s unfortunate that this movie wasn’t made several years ago, because I think Crispin Glover would’ve made a good Teatime when he was younger. I must say, the bogeymen weren’t at all what I expected, though. All in all, I’m pretty much in agreement with you. I’m wondering how the next movie will be & when it will be broadcast in the US. (They have already completed The Color of Magic, in case you hadn’t heard.)
