Movie Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)

I was a huge fan of the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. I thought it was a ton of fun and I watched it several times. Movie two was a little weirder, but I still enjoyed it. Movie three confused me more than anything, and I thought it was too long. Movie four… well… let me preface this by saying that we started watching it Friday night on DVD, but my husband fell asleep in the middle, so I woke him up, stopped the movie, and we finished watching it on Saturday afternoon. This may have affected how I felt about it.

Movie Review: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)

[Very mild spoilers] This movie picks up at the exact moment when the last movie left off. I think I’d have been wiser to watch Part 1 immediately before going to see Part 2, in fact, because they give you no flashes to the past, no backstory, nothing. Not that this is a complaint, it’s simply a fact…

Movie Review: Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011)

Kung Fu Panda 2 wasn’t as funny as the first movie. Sequels often don’t live up to the movie they’re continuing and I have to say I think Kung Fu Panda 2 falls into that category…

Movie Review: Black Swan (2010)

Black Swan is the kind of movie that leaves you wondering at the end what exactly it was that you just saw. We follow the journey of Nina as she lands the lead role in the ballet Swan Lake and tries to prepare for the darker role of the Black Swan. Her director is not sure that she, as innocent as she is, has it in her to portray the darker role, though he acknowledges that she dances well enough to play the part…

Movie Review: Furry Vengeance (2010)

We saw this movie over Labor Day weekend on Pay Per View and I can only say I’m glad I didn’t see this in the theater. As an afternoon boredom-killer at home it wasn’t quite so bad, but if I’d paid $10 each to see it as part of an evening out I’d be a little miffed…

Movie Review: Avatar (2009)

Movie Review: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)

[Warning: contains spoilers!] It must be said that it was a lot of book to try to pack into one movie (which is why, while it means an annoying wait, I’m glad they have decided to do the last book as two movies). Even at nearly three hours it was still going to be missing a lot of things no matter what they did. However, there were so many elements removed (and characters—no Dursleys at all, for example) that most fans of the books…

Movie Review: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

Movie Review: The Golden Compass (2007)

Movie Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)

Three meows is actually generous. I gave a little extra because Johnny Depp is just so much fun, and because I like the Pirates franchise so much. This film seemed to suffer from “plot-itis”, or a swelling of the plot…

Movie Review: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007)

This was a fun movie. It was. I enjoyed it. I’m not a comic book person and so I had to have my friend brief me on the backstory before the movie started (I didn’t see the previous ones) but as she said to me, it’s pretty simple stuff. So why am I only giving it two meows?
